Called โsilent giantsโ barges carry millions of tons of commodities through St. Paul on the Mississippi River. The river provides both jobs and an environmentally friendly option to move goods without adding trains to tracks, or trucks to roads. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a Twin Cities organization more than half a million dollars to reduce harmful diesel emissions from trucks, utility equipment and a tugboat that operate around the metro region. โThese projects will help people breathe cleaner air,โ said EPA Region 5 Administrator Cathy Step. โClean diesel grants also spur innovation and support jobs by helping to replace older, dirtier engines with newer, cleaner ones.โ
